Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

Lemosho
Route

The most scenic approach to the summit — and the highest success rate.

Route Overview

The Finest Approach
to Uhuru Peak

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful and rewarding route up Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the west through remote, undisturbed wilderness, it crosses the vast Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit — providing extensive views, superior acclimatisation, and a relatively uncrowded experience.

AT ONE operates this route over 7 nights — one extra acclimatisation day more than most operators — which directly improves summit success rates. Our mountain crews, guides, and equipment are selected to the same standard as our safari operations.

The Journey

Day by Day

D1

2,100m → 3,500m

Londorossi Gate to Lemosho Glades

Drive through montane forest to the park boundary. Begin trekking through dense rainforest filled with colobus monkeys, elephant tracks, and the first high altitude moorland.

D2

3,500m → 3,900m

Shira 1 to Shira 2

The forest gives way to heathland. The vast Shira Plateau opens before you — a breathtaking ancient volcanic caldera now covered in giant heather and senecio.

D3

3,900m → 4,642m → 3,976m

Shira 2 to Barranco via Lava Tower

The acclimatisation day. Ascend to the Lava Tower at 4,642m before descending to Barranco. The principle: climb high, sleep low. Critical for summit success.

D4

3,976m → 4,035m

Barranco to Karanga

Cross the Barranco Wall — a scramble section that is more thrilling than difficult, rewarded with expansive views across the Southern Circuit and Heim Glacier.

D5

4,035m → 4,673m

Karanga to Barafu Base Camp

A short but critical day. Arrive at Barafu Camp — the launch point for the summit. Rest, hydrate, eat well. The summit attempt begins at midnight.

D6

4,673m → 5,895m → 3,100m

Summit Night & Descent

Midnight departure. Six hours of relentless ascent through volcanic scree in darkness. Stella Point. Then Uhuru Peak — the roof of Africa at 5,895m. Descend the same day to Mweka Camp.

D7

3,100m → 1,640m

Mweka Camp to Gate

A final morning descent through cloud forest. Certificate collection. Transfer to Arusha for celebration and rest.
